Digital Lomo: Manila 2011 / Sunday, February 20, 2011 @ 11:30 PM
Lomo Lomo is now one of the best FREE apps ever created for iPhone/iPod users. I downloaded this a couple of weeks ago and fell in love with it right away. I've always wanted to own a Lomo camera, but I really find it pricey for a vintage-y film camera.

Here are the series of shots I took while we were on our way to Sofitel Luxury Hotel in Pasay to drop-off my brother for his J.S. Prom Night last Friday (February 19).

Blogging Hiatus + Thrift Shopping / @ 3:35 AM
Last week was kind of stressful for me because I had my IVT Training for 3 days. I'm glad I don't have to wake up at 5am again...for the next couple of days. Yah, that was the stressful part. I still have to undergo completion of my IVT cases next week for about 3-5 days... STRESS DRILON. Hahaha!

Anyway, last Friday (February 11), I went on thrift shopping at Quiapo with my ka-barkada, A.M. Heard mass at Quiapo Church first, then ukay and accessories shopping after. I only brought 500 pesos with me. And guess what? After all the things we did that day, I even had more or less 100 pesos left in my pocket (food + transporation to and from included)! Cool, eh?

Talking about Thrift/Ukay Shopping, it was the first time I did this. I did some research the night before and it really helped. We found this building along Villalobos St. and beside Mercury Drug. Almost the entire 1st floor's comprised of ukay stalls/stuff. Prices range from 10 pesos to less than 500 pesos, depending on what type of clothes they're selling. The place is air-conditioned, which is really a good thing, since it will be very difficult for us to shop in scorching heat plus the smell of old clothes! I have been to an ukay store in Baguio but I didn't last for, I think, a minute inside because my uber senstive nose can't take the smell of old clothes (and it's not even air-conditioned). The clothes don't really have this foul or mabahong smell, but they have this old-ish, chemical-ish smell. Anyway, after staying for a few minutes inside the building in Quiapo, I can already feel my itchy nose, but I tolerated it pretty well.

I saw a couple of branded clothes like Liz Claiborne, Gap, Old Navy, Tommy Hilfiger, Mossimo, Levis, and a lot more. I'm really not after the brand names so I started looking for clothes that really fit my taste. I saw a bunch of maong shorts (mostly are branded) for 50 pesos but I was really hesitant to get them because I wanted to try them first. I didn't bother trying on all the clothes there, because yeah, most are already used and I don't even know what chemicals they used for it. I bought 5 tops from one stall which costs 50 pesos each. I haggled and got them from 40 pesos each = 200 pesos for the 5 items! Strolled around the floor and found a sign: "10 PESOS", and I was like, WOAAAAAH! I should get something from that rack of clothes! And yes I was lucky enough to find a green flower-ish blazer! Got tired from all the walking inside the building so we headed out to the accessories store just a few steps away from the ukay building. It's Wellmansons Accessories Shop, which I found out by just researching on-line.

I have been there for the 3rd time already, I guess. The first time I was there, I bought raw materials for Kidada bracelets and second was with Rina, Renjie, and Homer (my college classmates). I love Wellmansons because they have a very wide selection of accessories, from raw materials to ready-to-wear and other cute stuff you can see in the malls, but you can buy it there in a much cheaper price! This time, I bought a snake connector ring, a bow ring, and a pair of pearl earrings. Total bill was less than 200 pesos. I wanted to buy this Chinese lucky charm bracelet, but I don't really wear bracelets that often.

The Snake connector ring and Bow ring I bought from Wellmansons.

I hope I could do this thrift shopping more often and try other places. At least once a month! I really feel very happy and fulfilled after buying those fab pieces without hurting my pocket!

A Taste of Binondo / Friday, February 11, 2011 @ 6:45 PM
This entry is supposedly for last Tuesday, February 8. I kept asking for the copies of the photos and they were only given to me last night!

Our supposedly Chinese New Year celebration in Binondo last Friday was moved today. It was a good decision though since it will be very difficult for us to look for a parking space, or maybe even a place to eat if we went on that day.

I have read blog entries on where to eat in Binondo so we were able to plan our itinerary before we went there: Meet before lunch time, look for a parking space, lunch at Wai Ying, take home some fried siopao and walk along Ongpin Street.

1. Meet before lunch time: ✓

2. Look for a parking space: ✓
Fortunately, we found a mini-parking lot along Ongpin Street, just a few steps away from Quintin Paredes and San Lorenzo Ruiz Basilica.

3. Lunch at Wai Ying, Benavidez St.: ✓
Thanks to Google Map! Haha! We were able to look for the streets just last night. Our landmark was President's Tea House, since we've been there before. President's Tea House is along Salazar St. If you're from San Lorenzo Ruiz Basilica side, from Ongpin St., turn right on Salazar St. You will pass by President's Tea House and a couple of fruit stands and mini-grocery shops. The first street on your right is Benavidez St. Wai Ying Fast Food can be found on your right side.
Place: Clean, Airconditioned, Has 2 floors (I think). We were on the 2nd floor, it was kind of peaceful compared to the 1st floor.
Foods we ordered: Roasted Duck & Asado with Rice, Asado & Soy Chicken with Rice, Hakaw, Kutchai Dumpling. And as usual they gave us a complimentary tea while waiting. I think it was Jasmine Tea.
Total Bill: Around Php415 ✓ ✓ ✓
Our verdict: 9/10. Almost perfect if not for the Kutchai Dumplings. Hahaha.

Here are the food photos we took. SOMEONE left my camera inside the car so I have no choice but to use a mobile camera. Hay!

I had this Roasted Duck and Asado with rice.

This is Soy Chicken and Asado with Rice.

Our new favorite dumplings: Hakaw!

4. Walk along Ongpin Street: ✓
We accidentally found the infamous Estero while looking for Shanghai Fried Siopao. And it really is beside an estero. We were supposed to eat there but we always prefer an airconditioned place. Haha! We also passed by the Cafe Mezzanine and Eng Bee Tin, just a few steps away from our parking space. There were a lot of vendors selling Chinese lucky charms but I think the ones they're selling were not yet "blessed".

5. Shanghai Fried Siopao ✓
The store is along Ongpin St. It is not literally fried. I don't know how they're cooking it, but for me they're even better than the regular siopaos!
We ordered: 4 Fried Siopaos
Total Bill: Php64 (Php16 each)

We were not able to eat the fried siopaos on our way home because of extreme feeling of fullness. Hahaha. We just munched on the M&M's Pretzels (which I tasted for the first time). And my verdict: As what the packaging says, it's crunchy, salty, and sweet. Nothing special about it. I'm not sure though if it's already available in the local market.

Finally! A shot from my camera. The M&M's Pretzels.

So that's it. Authentic Chinese cuisine for less!

Self-Confessed Discount-aholic / Sunday, February 6, 2011 @ 1:11 AM
Who doesn't love DISCOUNTS, SALES, PROMOS, FREEBIES?

Last year, I signed up for the Club EDSA Shangrila (one year) membership just to get their discounts and enjoy their benefits. I also enjoy getting coupons from McDonald's which they always give out in bulk! I bought the Belle de Jour Power Planner 2009 & 2011 for the discount coupons they have (and their girly & lovely layout). Whenever I window shop online, I always check the clearance/sale part of the site before I run through their regular-priced items.

But this recent discovery is now one of my frequently visited sites whenever I go on-line (and they are even bookmarked in my browser!). The terms of these websites are almost the same. You have to check out their daily "deals" or "offers", purchase the deal, pay with your card (or you can pay over-the-counter for some), print the vouchers and you're good to go. You can browse through their website to check on their past deals/offers and to check on some specific purchasing rules.

1. Cash Cash Pinoy
Daily Deals: 1 per day. Restaurants, Salons, Boutiques, Hotels, and more.
Payment: Credit Card (I am not sure if they allow over-the-counter payments)

2. Ensogo
Daily Deals: They have more than one deal that lasts for days.
Payment: Credit Card and Over the Counter

3. Buyanihan
Daily Deals: 1 per day but they require a number of people to purchase the deal for the voucher to be valid. If the deal doesn't reach the number of people required, the deal will be cancelled and they will give your money back (if you have paid for it already)
Payment: Credit Card and Over the Counter

4. Metro Deal
Daily Deals: 1 per day.
Payment: Credit Card (I am not sure if they allow over-the-counter payments)

5. Deal Grocer
Daily Deals: Their deals are posted per week.
Payment: Credit Card, Paypal, Over the Counter

Now enjoy obsessing on their tempting and $$$-saving deals!

P.S. If you happen to know websites that offer the same stuff, feel free to share it below. Thank you!

The Resting Nurse: PILOT ENTRY / Saturday, February 5, 2011 @ 2:41 AM
Blogging was once a part of my "teenage" life until I became busy with school, friends, paperworks, etc! I was able to maintain a blog "space" for months, which I will NEVER dare disclose in this new "space".

Before 2010 ended, I added blogging in my 2011 To-Do Checklist, and I half-heartedly started it last January...on Tumblr. I became impatient arranging the photos I uploaded so I wasn't able to continue blogging there. I even haven't posted my first entry there. Haha! So now with the help of the support group I found in my new "digital" home, I now have the guts, willpower, determination (and whatever is needed!) to start a new blog site/space/spot.

Since this is my FIRST entry here in my new home, I think I have the temporary right to possess a narcissistic personality. Yes, me, myself, and I. This will also lead you to the reason why I named this... "THE RESTING NURSE"

I am proud to say that I am a young achiever. I might sound mayabang, but I think this is just one of the few things I have the right to brag about. I graduated and passed the Nursing Licensure Exam (here in the Philippines) at a young age of 20. But my professional career is on a "plateau" mode right now, so the bragging stops there. Hahaha!

I find real happiness in a lot of things! In Pinoys' term, mababaw ang kaligayahan. Eating out with friends, seeing friends who I haven't seen for a while, taking random (and funny) photos, playing with kids, thrift shopping, window online shopping, sales/promos, winning online contests, airplanes, travelling, good-looking boys, random freebies, spur-of-the-moment thoughts, beaches, travelling, eat-all-you-can restaurants, weight loss, weddings, photography, Forever 21, or those simple typographical errors that can mean something else! Can you imagine how easy it is to make me happy?

Right now, I still feel happy and blessed despite the slow (very) progress in my career. I am not the only one who is in this kind of situation, I think we're more than a hundred thousand as of this time. The only thing I could do right now is pray hard-er and do all the things I can and want, because once I become a REAL NURSE, I will be a having a very little chance of getting this free time I'm having right now.

This is a shot taken during my clinical graduation last March 2010. This is the "pin" given to the graduates for successfully finishing the 2 roller-coaster-ride years of clinical duties, which started when I was in my junior year. (Our clinical graduation is different from our "university graduation", so I had 2 graduations when I was in college)
